VI. Weather Identification Drills

Weather Identification Drills

Weather Identification Drills

The following drills will provide you more practice identifying various weather situations. The drills will test your ability to identify each of the 27 states of sky, as well as the 100 present weather types and their appropriate symbols and codes. The codes are part of the reporting criteria for synoptic observations. Additionally, this knowledge will be useful as you complete exams to advance to higher grades.

The drills are set up to allow you to practice and improve. Take your time as you go through the exercises and remember that you are not being scored on the exercises, nor is there a time limit for completing them. They are for your practice only and will help you practice identifying and coding the various weather situations.

Note that the drills are designed to react to your performance. If you miss a question, you will be tasked with answering that question correctly two more times before "mastering" the item. Be careful and avoid guessing as you work through the exercises.

States of the Sky Resources

Before beginning the states of the sky drill, you may wish to spend some time reviewing the cloud identification information on the NOAA JetStream site, http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/clouds/cloudchart.htm.
