3. Unit description and objectives

In this unit you will learn how the physical properties of radio waves can be used to provide a more precise estimate of distance than is possible through the timing of signal transmission and reception. After completing this unit you should be able to:

  1. Describe how wavelengths are used for precise distance measurement.
  2. Describe the use of phase measurement and integer count to obtain precise distance measurement to the satellite.
  3. Explain how post-processing services such as NOAA’s OPUS are used to increase accuracy and reduce positioning error.
